Characterization of White Lupin Seed Coats

White lupin (Lupinus albus L.), a winter legume crop with tremendous potential as food crop, has been evaluated at Virginia State University for several years. This effort developed winter-hardy, high-yielding lines, which vary in alkaloid concentration the seeds. Current study was conducted to characterize various component of seed especially coat and cotyledon portion seeds five lines (VSU-1, VSU-1X, VSU-5, VSU-10, VSU-101). Five hundred each line were separated into coats cotyledons record relative proportions. Whole seeds, coats, analyzed determine concentrations protein, fiber, fat, iron zinc. Significant differences observed among proportion, varied from 22.6 25.6 percent. Proportions protein (7.8, 41.6, 34.3 percent), fiber (44.7, 1.0, 12.2 fat (1.3, 10.4, 8.6 zinc (14.5, 61.9, 50.8 percent) significantly cotyledons, whole seed, respectively but not concentration. Results this indicate that separation white could be used develop value-added products; increase nutritional quality seeds; enhance lupin’s suitability plant source.
